It carries the load and lifts it off itself, so one vehicle and one driver / operator do the work of a lorry plus a separate crane. "Hiab" is a manufacturer's name that became the everyday word for a lorry loader. Also written "hi ab", "hi-ab" and "HIAB". **What does hiab stand for?** Nothing, as an English acronym. HIAB comes from Hydrauliska Industri AB, the Swedish firm that built the first lorry-mounted hydraulic crane in 1944. The name became generic in Britain the way Hoover did for vacuum cleaners. **Is hiab hire the same as hiab crane hire, truck-mounted crane hire, lorry-mounted crane hire, lorry loader hire, crane truck hire or hiab rental?** Yes. All of these describe the same thing: a lorry with a crane on it, hired with a driver / operator. "Lorry loader" is the formal industry term. Tell us roughly what the item is, where it is going and what the access is like at each end, and we will tell you which vehicle suits. Nobody is expected to read a load chart before getting in touch. "It is a shipping container and it needs to go in a back garden" is enough to start with. **What is the smallest hiab Nortons runs?** A 7.5-tonne Mercedes flatbed. Most small lifts that people assume need a van-sized crane are better done by a 7.5-tonne or a rigid, because the limit is usually reach and access rather than weight: a bigger vehicle with a longer boom can often stand further back and still place the load. Describe the job and we will say which is right. **How far in advance do I need to book?** There is no minimum notice. Same-day and next-day work is often possible, particularly around Manchester and the North West.
