Why it works like this

No cookies until you ask for one

An ordinary YouTube embed contacts Google the moment the page opens, whether or not anybody watches. It slows the page down and it hands over a visit that never happened.

This page holds a still image instead, and holds it twice over. Nothing is requested from YouTube while you read, and the play button itself stays shut until the cookie policy has been accepted — the same consent that governs everything else on the site. Accept it and the films unlock where they stand, with no reload. Press play and the player is built at that moment, pointed at YouTube’s no-cookie host. Nothing else on the page changes.
