The short version
One lorry, a yard in Miles Platting, and 19 years
Nortons Hiab Services Ltd was established in Greater Manchester in 2007 with a single lorry. We now run a fleet of hiab lorries, artics, wagon-and-drag trucks and trailers across mainland England, Scotland and Wales, from the same base off Hulme Hall Lane.
The wagons are our own rather than hired in, and we invest in new ones continually rather than running trucks into the ground. That matters more than it sounds: it is what makes it possible to commit a specific lorry to a client’s programme, and it is why the 32 and 44 tonne trucks are Euro VI.
We are still small enough that the office knows the jobs. Keith Robinson runs transport, Karen Thompson runs accounts, and staff retention here is among the highest in the industry — which is why clients on ongoing work tend to get the same drivers.

Accounts Manager. Handles invoicing, trade accounts and credit applications.
Angus Quinn
Transport and Cabins Manager. Looks after the cabin work alongside the haulage, both moving portable cabins for clients and the used cabins we sell.
The wider team
Most of our drivers and crane operators are ALLMI trained and CPCS qualified, with continuous skills training. We have a NEBOSH qualified health and safety officer and our own appointed persons, several driver / operators hold Rail Track PTS, and we are LINK UP members for safety critical sites.
The cranes are worked by remote control, so the driver / operator stands where they can actually see the load rather than sitting in a cab looking at it side-on.

How we work
Three things we do differently
We publish the load charts
Real capacity-at-radius tables for all five cranes on the fleet, each linked to the manufacturer data sheet it came from.
We say no when it is not a hiab job
If the lift is outside the chart or the access will not take the vehicle, we would rather tell you at the enquiry than fail on site.
Email first, not a phone queue
Tell us what needs lifting and where it has to go. It answers more than a phone call and it leaves a record both of us can check.

How long have you been going?
Nortons Hiab Services Ltd has been established in Greater Manchester since 2007, which makes this our 20th year. We started with one vehicle.
Are you independent?
Yes. Independently owned, and the lorries are our own rather than hired in from another haulier. That is what lets us commit a vehicle to a contract instead of working to the end of somebody elses hire agreement.
What is in the fleet?
Rigid lorries, artics and wagon-and-drag trucks, all our own. The 32 tonne and 44 tonne wagons are Euro VI. Our range of vehicles is set out on the fleet page.
Who will I be dealing with?
A small office. Keith Robinson is our Transport Manager, Angus Quinn looks after transport and cabins, and Karen Thompson runs accounts. You are not going through a call centre and you will generally speak to the same people.
What makes you different from a haulier?
The crane. A haulier carries your load; we carry it and lift it into place, which means one vehicle, one visit and nobody waiting on site. And we publish the actual load charts for every crane we run, which as far as we can tell no other UK hiab driver / operator does.
