Why contract rather than ad hoc

The vehicle is there because it is yours that week

On a live site the problem is rarely the price of a load; it is whether a lorry turns up when the programme says it should. A contract fixes the rate, fixes the vehicle type and gives you a booking route that does not start from scratch every time.

We run a fleet of hiab lorries, wagons and trailers, all our own rather than hired in, and we invest in new trucks continually. That is what makes committing a lorry to a contract possible.

The 32 tonne and 44 tonne wagons are Euro VI, so clean air zone compliance is not something you have to check before each city centre delivery.

Just in time

The service that came out of small sites

Major developments with hundreds of workers on a footprint the size of a car park have become normal across the North West. Storing the materials they need is the part nobody has room for.

1. It arrives at our yard

Deliveries come to our Manchester depot rather than to your compound. Seven acres, monitored around the clock and secured with CCTV.

2. It waits there, not on site

Temporary or long term, so the site is not paying for space it does not have or losing a working area to a stack of materials.

3. It arrives when it is needed

Called off on demand. Our fleet takes it out of storage, delivers it and positions it — the crane is on the lorry, so it goes where it is going to be used.

If your pre-qualification questionnaire wants something not on this list, ask — it is quicker than guessing what we hold.

Common questions

Contract haulage, answered

What does a haulage contract with you actually look like?

Usually an agreed rate, an agreed vehicle type and a booking route that does not involve requoting every load. Some clients book by the day for a fixed period, some call vehicles off as a site programme needs them. We will fit whichever suits how your job runs.

Can we open a credit account?

Yes, for regular customers and subject to credit checks. Ask us for the trade account application and we will send it over.

Do you work for public sector clients?

Yes. Public and private sector both, including local authority, utility and infrastructure work. We are FORS Bronze accredited and LINK UP members for safety critical rail sites, which is generally what a tender is asking about.

What is the "just in time" service?

It came out of working on city centre sites with almost no storage. Materials sit in our Manchester yard rather than on your compound, and we deliver and position them on the day they are needed. It stops a small site being blocked by its own deliveries.

Will we get the same drivers?

As far as we can manage it, yes. Our staff retention is high and clients on ongoing contracts tend to see the same faces, which matters when someone needs to know the site rather than just the postcode.

Do you take on haulage contracts?

Yes. Ongoing haulage contracts are a large part of what we do, alongside one-off lifts. A contract with us usually means an agreed rate, a named vehicle type and a way of calling the work off that suits your programme rather than ours - weekly, by the load, or on demand from stock we hold in our yard.

How do you get haulage contracts in the UK as a supplier?

If you are asking as a customer looking for a haulier, the honest version is that most haulage contracts UK wide start with one job that went well. Ours nearly all did. Send us a single movement, watch how it is handled, and talk about a contract afterwards. Anybody who wants a contract signed before they have carried anything for you is asking you to take the risk.

Is a haulage contract cheaper than booking job by job?

Usually, because it lets us plan. A contract that gives us notice of the pattern of work lets vehicles be loaded both ways and lets your loads pair with return journeys, and that is where the saving comes from. We publish no rates because every contract is priced on its own shape.
