Hiab hire in Wigan

Wigan is half an hour along the M61 and the work there leans industrial: plant moved between yards, material onto sites, and units into compounds on ground that is frequently softer than it looks.

The work

What we do in Wigan

Ground conditions come up more often around Wigan than in most places we work, and for a good reason - a lot of the flat, open, apparently ideal standing positions are on reclaimed land. An 855 on full stabiliser span puts around 220 kN through a single leg, which on soft cohesive ground needs a spreader pad over two metres square. We carry pads and we plan for it; what we cannot plan for is not being told the yard was a colliery.

Plant movement is the other steady thread. Machines get lifted onto the bed rather than driven on, which means no ramps, no tracking damage to somebody else's yard, and a machine that arrives clean. For anything too tall for a flatbed the low loader does the same job with a lower deck.

Most of the photographs on this page are from one job. A 14ft wide medical pool went to a private property on a new build at Wigan, travelling as a wide load and then placed over 17 metres from where the vehicle stood, in through the gap between two houses, because there was no way round the back. The 855 was worked by David Connor and the customer's fitters took it from there.

Because Wigan is close, a job there can often be fitted around another one on the same day, and that generally shows up in the quote rather than in the small print.

Common questions

Hiab hire in Wigan, answered

Do you actually cover Wigan?

Yes, and the photographs on this page are from jobs we have done there rather than stock images. A 14ft wide medical pool on the road to Wigan, rigged on the bed, and lifted in through the gap between two houses on a new build, plus modular units set into a compound. Where we can show the work, we show it.

How quickly can you get there?

It depends on the day and what is already committed, but the area is regular rather than exceptional for us. There is no minimum booking notice. Email with the date and we will tell you straight away whether it is achievable, rather than take the booking and work it out later.

What does a job like that cost?

It is priced by the job, not by the mile. Vehicle size, how far out the load has to be placed, the access and the time on site move the number far more than the distance does. Everything that changes a hiab price is set out on the cost page, and you do not need to know any of those figures to ask us for one.

Where do you run from?

Our yard is at Miles Platting in Manchester - one site, our own vehicles and our own ALLMI trained driver / operators, rather than work farmed out to a local sub-contractor we have never met. Wigan is regular running for us, and jobs are priced by the job rather than by the mile, so the distance from the yard is not a line on your quote.
