Commercial Truck & Plant Tyre Fitter
An experienced truck, commercial and plant tyre fitter for our own tyre depot on Norton Street, on workshop, mobile and roadside work across Manchester and the North West.
What the job is
Nortons run their own tyre depot on Norton Street, a couple of hundred yards from the hiab yard. It fits and repairs tyres on our own fleet and on plenty that are nothing to do with us — cars, vans, wagons, trailers and plant — and it runs a mobile service that goes out to roadside and site breakdowns across Manchester and the North West.
We are looking for a fitter who has done commercial work before. That is the one thing we will not bend on. If your experience is car tyres only this is not the right vacancy, and we would rather say so here than have you spend an afternoon on an application.
The rest of it is a mixture. Some days you are in the bays with a wagon up on the lift; some days you are out in the van on a call-out with the traffic going past your shoulder. The fitters here have been with us ten to fifteen years on average, which is the useful thing to know about the place.

- Competitive, plus call-out earnings — the actual figure depends on your licence, your qualifications and your experience, and we would rather discuss it with you than publish a bracket

Day to day
- Truck, commercial, plant and car tyre fitting
- Roadside, on-site and motorway call-outs
- Fleet inspections and tyre maintenance
- Workshop fitting and mobile fitting from a fully equipped van
- Keeping the safety standards and the paperwork straight
The person
- Proven truck or commercial tyre fitting experience, essential rather than preferred
- Experience of roadside and on-site work
- Full UK driving licence
- A sound understanding of tyre safety and health and safety practice
- A customer-facing manner, because on a call-out you are the only one of us they meet
- Able to work on your own and as part of the bay team
If the qualification is what is missing
We cannot train somebody into commercial tyre fitting from nothing, which is why the experience has to be there before you apply. What we will do for the right person is put you through further tyre and safety qualifications, and open the out-of-hours call-out rota to you, which is where the extra earnings are.
The depot carries a seven day call-out and a full mobile fitting service, so the out-of-hours work is real work rather than a line in an advert, and it is paid as such.
